As research into cannabis advances, more and more people are asking, what is CBD and what is CBD oil? CBD is an abbreviated term for natural cannabidiol and the short answer is that CBD oil is a type of cannabinoid extract. The obvious question now is, what is a cannabinoid? Well, to understand that, a little history lesson will be helpful.
The History of Cannabis
Cannabis is going through an astounding growth period. As many countries around the world and states within the US move towards the legalization of cannabis (for both recreational and medicinal purposes), this growth is fueling research into cannabis for medical purposes.
For centuries, cannabis has been used as a medicinal herb. It was back in the early ’70s when the US and other nations reclassified it as a narcotic. In recent years, all 50 states have been moving towards legalization, and research is uncovering that there is much more to cannabis than we ever thought!
Hemp vs. Marijuana
Both hemp and marijuana are types of cannabis, but the distinguishing characteristic is that marijuana can have up to 30% THC (tetrahydrocannabinol, which is what gives you the high), while hemp maxes out at 0.3% THC. That means that CBD extract has such a low concentration of THC that you can’t get high using it.
How Does CBD Oil Work?
Cannabis contains compounds known as cannabinoids. These cannabinoids (like THC and CBD) interact with our endocannabinoid system (ECS). The endocannabinoid system is responsible for maintaining balance and harmony in our body, controlling things like emotion, sleep, hunger, and pain relief. The ECS is made up of receptors spread throughout the body, central nervous system, and brain. CBD and other cannabinoids interact with these receptors, and the bond creates a chemical reaction.

What Is CBD Oil Used For?
There are many benefits, but maybe the most important development in scientific research is that there is strong evidence that CBD is great for treating epilepsy (though you want to be careful about taking it with other anti-epilepsy drugs; patients often lower the dose to avoid side effects). Clinical trials that have been performed on humans suggest that CBD is effective in treating anxiety, specifically social anxiety. We want to be careful about over-promising its effects, but CBD is showing lots of useful applications in treating other conditions, but the truth is that because of the legal history of cannabis, a lot is still unknown and untested. Maybe its most promising use is as an anti-inflammatory. Testing is still ongoing, but it shows potential benefits with the following:
- Sleep aid (two in depth studies, as of the date of publication of this article)
One great aspect is that CBD oil comes from natural sources with no harmful additives, so you are treating yourself with medication that has only one known side effect (it’s shown an increase in liver enzymes for 2 percent of users). Ask your doctor about CBD, but be aware that people in the medical establishment often unjustifiably resist innovation for a number of reasons (liability, self interest, ignorance, etc.), so be sure to go with a doctor you trust. What is CBD Vape Oil?
Also referred to as CBD vape juice, this is simply a type of CBD oil extract that can be inhaled as vapor with a vape pen.
What Is the Difference Between CBD and Hemp Oil?
Though they both come from the same hemp plant, most producers extract hemp oil from seeds, whereas CBD oil is extracted from the whole plant. Because many do not understand what the difference is, sometimes we refer to White Tiger CBD oil as CBD hemp oil simply because it helps distinguish our CBD from CBD extracted from marijuana plants.
